Focus and Scope
Nusantara: Journal of Religion and Civilization publishes scholarly works that examine religion, culture, and civilisation from a local-global perspective, with a particular focus on the heritage of the Nusantara region and its relevance to global discourse. The scope includes (but is not limited to): studies of religion and culture (interactions between local religions and cultures, religious traditions and local wisdom, and religion in the context of social change); Islam Nusantara and modernity (the contribution of Islam Nusantara to global discourse, progressive Islamic thought, contextualisation of teachings, and its relationship with human values and social justice); spirituality and civilisation (the role of spirituality in shaping social order, the influence of Eastern spirituality on world culture, and religious ethics for an inclusive civilisation); Interfaith dialogue and multiculturalism (interfaith studies for social harmony, opportunities and challenges of pluralism, and conflict resolution models based on religious and cultural values); and Contemporary issues and religion (religion in the dynamics of globalisation and modernity, media technology and the transformation of religious understanding, and religion and global humanitarian issues such as peace, justice, and the environment).
This journal accepts articles based on empirical research (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods), ethnography, case studies, systematic scoping reviews, conceptual-theoretical articles, and research-based policy briefs. Interdisciplinary contributions encompassing studies in Islam, theology, anthropology, sociology, history, cultural studies, communication, peace studies, law, education, and environmental science are highly encouraged. The geographical focus is global, with a particular emphasis on Southeast Asia and the Nusantara communities. Each manuscript must demonstrate novelty or clear theoretical and practical contributions, methodological rigour, and ethical research sensitivity. All submissions experience double-blind peer review in accordance with national and international standards of accredited journals, with a commitment to data openness (where relevant), responsible citation, and scientific integrity.
